Data Governance Group Charge for Wartburg College

Data Governance is a framework of accountabilities and processes for making decisions and monitoring the execution of data management. Wartburg’s institutional data is a college-wide asset that should be readily available to support evidence-based decision-making to drive informed action. Wartburg College maintains several managed data systems which the college community uses to perform daily operations, support planning and provide reporting. The charge to the Data Governance Group (DGG) is to provide counsel to the Chief Information Officer in regard to these data systems to ensure data integrity, best practices in data management, reporting standards, information consistency, and enforced security.  The Data Governance Group is responsible for providing guidance on defining and managing the implementation of those policies and procedures related to data governance at Wartburg College. In addition, the Data Governance Group is charged with identifying data and reporting needs related to strategic planning priorities and the sharing of business knowledge across divisions to ensure consistent data and reporting. Through collaboration with all appropriate divisions and departments, the Data Governance Group contributes to compliance with the Higher Learning Commission (HLC) requirements related to institutional data used for accreditation.

  • Assist in the identification of data stewards responsible for data elements in their purview

Data steward responsibilities:

  • Develop governance policies and procedures to support data requests across campus
  • Classify data under their purview according to the Data Classification Policy
  • Share business knowledge and practices across units and divisions to optimize information management
  • Identify information that supports strategic planning initiatives as it relates to student success and operational efficiencies
  • Provide guidance and recommendations on best-practice data information systems and processes including the evaluation of new business practices and data delivery systems
  • Identify and resolve data quality issues
  • Create and manage the data dictionary of terms used for informational reporting so that reports are consistent, and terms are clearly defined
  • Provide easy and quick access to reports and information to college and community constituencies while adhering to proper security access
