How to - Finding a MAC Address

Wartburg College's network is protected with Network Access Controls. In order for your devices to be able to access network resources or the internet, they need to be registered. For instructions on how to register your devices, look for the article titled "Start Here - Connect to the Network" under Related Articles.

A MAC address is the unique identifier for a network device and consists of 6 pairs of a letter and/or a number usually separated by colons (eg. 0A:11:B2:CC:3D:EF). If you are experiencing problems registering your device, a Techline support representative may request this ID. You can either bring the device to the help desk in CTC 100, or follow the instructions below to locate the MAC:

• Windows 11/10
• macOS
• Apple iOS and iPadOS
• Android
• Xbox One
• Playstation 5
• Playstation 4
• Nintendo Switch | Nintendo 3DS 
• Kindle Fire | Kindle Paperwhite & Kindle First Generation
• Apple TV
• Roku
• Google Home
• Amazon Echo & Alexa

Windows 11 or 10

1. Open the command prompt by searching Command Prompt in the Start Menu search or taskbar.
2. Type ipconfig /all and press Enter. This will display your network configuration. 
3. Find your adapter's physical address. Scroll down to your network adapter and look for the values next to "Physical Address," which is your MAC address.
   • You will have unique MAC address for your wired and wireless adapters. If you are confused on which one is important, just copy the whole list and send to your Techline support tech.

macOS

1. Click the Apple icon located at the top left corner of the screen.
2. Select System Preferences.
3. Select Network.
4. Select the appropriate connection type on the left, Wi-Fi or Ethernet.
5. Click Advanced located in the bottom right corner of the screen.
6. The MAC address will be labeled as “Wi-Fi Address” or “Airport Address.”

Apple iOS

1. Select Settings from the home screen.
2. Select General
3. Select About
4. Your MAC address will be listed under Wi-Fi Address

Android

Some Android devices differ depending on the manufacturer and which version of Android is running, but in general the MAC address can be found by the following method:

1. Select Settings from the applications menu
2. Near the bottom of the settings menu, select About Device
3. Select Status
4. The MAC address will be listed under Wi-Fi MAC Address

Xbox One

1. From the main Xbox One homepage, select My Games & Apps
2. Select Settings
3. Select Network
4. Select Advanced Settings
5. Your Wired MAC address will be listed on the right

 Playstation 5

1. Navigate to the Settings icon located in the upper right hand corner
2. Select System
3. Select Console Information
4. The wireless MAC address is listed next to MAC Address (Wi-Fi) or MAC Address (LAN Cable)

Playstation 4

1. Select Settings
2. Select System
3. Select System Information
4. Your MAC address will be listed next to MAC Address (Wi-Fi) or MAC Address (LAN Cable)

Nintendo Switch

1. Select System Settings from the HOME Menu.
2. Scroll down through the menu and select Internet
3. The Nintendo Switch console's MAC address will be listed under System MAC Address

Nintendo 3DSXL, 3DS, 2DS

1. Select System Settings
2. Select Internet Settings
3. Select Other Information
4. Select Confirm MAC address

Kindle Fire

1. From the Home screen, select the gear icon
2. Select More +
3. Select Device
4. Your MAC address will be listed under Wi-Fi MAC Address

Kindle Paperwhite / First Generation

1. From the home screen, select Menu
2. Select Settings
3. Select Menu
4. Select Device Info
5. Your MAC address will be listed under Wi-Fi MAC Address

Apple TV

1. Select Settings
2. Select About
3. Your MAC address will be listed next to Ethernet ID

or

1. You can also find your MAC address on the UPC label of your Apple TV labeled as Ethernet ID

Roku

1. From the Home screen, press Up to show the menu bar
2. Select Settings
3. Select Player Info
4. Your MAC address will be listed

Google Home

1. Turn on the Google Home.
2. Open the Google Home App on your tablet or phone.
3. Choose the Google Home Mini from the list of nearby devices. Select Set Up.
4. When asked about your Wi-Fi info, tap on the three dots in the top-right corner of your screen.
5. You should see the MAC address of your Google Home Mini in the window that pops up.

Amazon Echo & Alexa Devices

1. Open the Alexa app on your tablet or phone. 
2. Select Devices at the bottom of the screen. 
3. Select Echo & Alexa in the upper-left of the screen.
4. Select the Echo device you want to register.
5. Scroll to the bottom of the page to the About menu. 
6. The MAC address will be listed on the About page.
